Printable blank rubric

Need a paper rubric to staple to an assignment? Build the grid in RubricKit, choose how many rows and columns you want, and click Print / PDF. The printout hides buttons and page furniture and keeps just the title and the table.

Click a cell to score a student.

Leave cells empty to get a blank rubric template you can fill in by hand, or write full descriptors for a finished rubric students can check their work against.

How to make a rubric

Start by listing the criteria you will grade, the qualities of the work rather than tasks, such as thesis, evidence or delivery. Then decide how many performance levels you need; four is the most common because it avoids a neutral middle. Give each level a name and a point value, and write a short descriptor in each cell describing what work at that level looks like. Use concrete, observable language so two teachers would give the same score.

When the grid is ready, print it or save it as a PDF and share it with students before they start, so they know what success looks like. To grade, click the Score button in the matching cell for each criterion. RubricKit adds the points, applies any weights and shows the percentage and letter grade. Clear the scores and repeat for the next student.

Analytic versus holistic rubrics

This tool builds analytic rubrics, which score each criterion separately and add them up. They give students detailed feedback and make grading more consistent. A holistic rubric gives one overall score; you can approximate one here with a single criterion and several levels.

Private by design

RubricKit has no server-side processing. Rubrics and scores stay in this browser in local storage on this device. Export a file to back up or move a rubric, and clear site data to remove everything.
